The asylum process

In order to qualify for asylum, you must apply through the Affirmative Asylum Process as described by the US Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS).

As a general overview, there are 7 steps to this process:

1. Arrive in the US
2. Completely the application
3. Fingerprinting appointment
4. Schedule an interview
5. Attend the asylum interview
6. Wait for the decision
7. Receive the decision (usually within 1 to 3 months)

The asylum interview is incredibly important for this process. This is the only opportunity you have to tell your story – in person – to an officer who will decide your future.

That’s why we highly recommend a professional, talented interpreter to support you on this journey.

The need for Spanish interpreters

Besides the fact that having an experienced interpreter is a great way to leave a positive impact — bringing any interpreter is required for many applicants.

If you are not able to perform a four-hour, formal, and delicate interview in English, then you are required to bring an interpreter.

❌ The USCIS office will not provide one for you.

In other words, if you do not bring an interpreter — or you bring an inexperienced one — then you can hurt your chances at being approved.

So considering how important this process is for you, we highly recommend bringing a professional with you to your USCIS interview.

The importance of interpreters for asylum interviews

If you are considering heading to your asylum interview without a Spanish interpreter — or with a friend — we strongly recommend against it.

This interview is incredibly important for you.

Here’s why you need a professional Spanish interpreter:

You need an expert in both languages The USCIS interview is crucial for your case

Your interpreter needs to understand highly technical immigration procedures in both English and Spanish

This is your only opportunity to explain your situation face-to-face with an officer.

They need to truly understand the terminology and be able to serve as a bridge between you and the USCIS officer. The outcome of this interview could decide your case. Let’s make sure you have a positive, convincing, and smooth interview.
Being bilingual isn’t enough You may need privacy
Being relatively fluent in two languages is NOT the same as being an interpreter professionally-trained in immigration protocol. The USCIS interview can be emotional, sensitive, and highly personal. You may need to talk about uncomfortable topics.

Interpreting is a difficult, tiring, and technical skills that requires years of experience. Don’t leave your future in the hands of someone without the training.

Speak with an interpreter who is bound to confidentiality, rather than sharing these details with a friend.

How to prepare for your asylum interview at ZAR

If you already have an interview scheduled at the Arlington Asylum Office, then here are a few tips to help you prepare.

Have all your paperwork ready.
Make sure you check – and double-check – that you have all your required documents. Always make a copy, just in case!

Also, don’t forget that your documents must be translated into English if the original is in Spanish.

Bring an attorney if necessary
It’s generally recommended to bring an attorney or a legal representative. Unfortunately, these will not be provided to you by the US Government, but if you are able to – we highly recommend it.

Practice telling your story in the mirror.
This is a fundamental step in receiving your refugee status. Please make sure to practice telling your story in detail.

We understand that you may need to speak about traumatic experiences. While it may be painful for you to think and speak about these events, it will be necessary to share them with the asylum officer. These will help them better understand whether you qualify for a grant of asylum.

Speak with your interpreter
If you decide to hire a professional Spanish interpreter for your asylum interview, then you’ll need to speak with them beforehand.

At Global YNS, our interpreters are highly trained and fully understand the protocol after 10+ years of experience. Our interpreters will meet with you 30 minutes before the start time of your interview to discuss details and will come fully prepared.

Spanish interpreters that specialize in asylum cases

A quality interpreter can make all the difference in your case. By hiring a professional, experienced, and certified interpreter – you’ll be much more likely to leave a positive impact on the officer.

But if you rely on a bad interpreter, you risk having delays, unprofessional behavior, or even getting expelled from the office.

Because even people who speak both languages well may struggle to effectively interpret a formal interview. It takes training and experience to perform this high-level skill perfectly, especially in a crucial moment in your life.
